Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) involves making changes to the content and coding of a website, and gaining a large number of links from existing high-ranking websites to your own site so you can gain a good position in the search engine rankings. Whilst keeping up-to-date and using the latest techniques, I feel it's essential not to forget the tried and tested, reliable methods that have been in use for some time.
Many so called "SEO Professionals" often use "black-hat" methods in an attempt to get you a good listing, however this often back fires. "Black-hat" techniques involve attempting to trick the search engines by spamming their site's with keywords, including content but hiding it from view and various other practices that should be avoided. If your site is found to have used "black-hat" techniques the chances are you site will be black listed and your chances of appearing on the results pages disappear almost completely.
Search engine results can not be guaranteed by anyone - no matter how experienced they may claim to be. If your targeting an over-populated market it could take up to a year before you start seeing the effects of SEO techniques.
